CAREERS Award of Excellence in Internships Nomination Form (Nominating a Mentor)

Thank you for taking the time to recognize an outstanding mentor through the CAREERS Award of Excellence in Internships. This award celebrates a professional who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to mentoring a CAREERS student intern/apprentice and who is helping shape Alberta’s future skilled workforce.

Tell us WHY they deserve to be nominated!

Please provide a detailed nomination (approximately 800–2000 words) describing why your nominee deserves this award. Your submission should clearly demonstrate how the mentor meets the eligibility requirements and embodies the key attributes of an outstanding mentor as outlined below.

In your submission, please consider the following:

1. Eligibility & Professional Standing

  • Confirm that the nominee is currently employed and accredited (where applicable) in their profession.

  • Describe their role within the organization and the industry.

  • Confirm that they have mentored a CAREERS student within the past calendar year.

  • Highlight their knowledge of their trade/occupation and their enthusiasm for mentoring youth.

2. Impact on the Student and Organization


Clearly illustrate how the mentor’s attributes positively impacted the student intern and/or benefited the organization. Provide specific examples wherever possible.

Consider addressing:

  • How did the mentor contribute to the student’s technical skill development?

  • How did they support the development of employability skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and professionalism?

  • What measurable or observable outcomes resulted from their mentorship?

  • How did their mentorship strengthen the organization’s culture, productivity, or commitment to youth development?

3. Key Attributes of an Outstanding Mentor


Provide examples demonstrating how the nominee exemplifies the following qualities:


Champion

  • How do they act as an ambassador for their industry?

  • How do they share stories of success and inspire students about career opportunities in high-demand occupations?

  • How do they promote pride in their profession?

Guide and Teacher

  • How do they serve as a professional role model?

  • In what ways are they approachable and supportive?

  • How do they communicate realistic expectations while helping students build confidence and competence?

  • How do they guide students in understanding workplace culture and standards?

Supervisor

  • How are they actively involved in the student’s daily activities and learning experiences?

  • How do they build trust and create a supportive environment?

  • How do they encourage gradual independence and self-motivation?

Assessor

  • How do they provide constructive, regular feedback?

  • How do they assess progress toward skill standards and learning outcomes?

  • How do they help students reflect on their growth and areas for improvement?

Safety Advisor

  • How do they model and promote safe work practices?

  • How do they ensure the student understands and complies with safety guidelines?

  • Do they conduct safety meetings, provide safety training, or hold relevant safety credentials?

  • How do they reinforce the importance of safety as a core professional value?

4. Commitment to Youth Development & Industry Growth


CAREERS: The Next Generation exists to create opportunities for motivated high school students to explore high-demand occupations and develop employability skills. Please describe how the nominee contributes to:

  • Increasing awareness of in-demand careers in Alberta

  • Building confidence and marketable skills in youth
